"We are researching Watts, mainly in Groton at present. In Glemsford we have:
Emily Boreham married in 1826 to William Watts (from Boyd's Marriage Index)
Elizabeth Watts bapt 24 September 1826, parents William and Emily (IGI).
Our main interest at present is in the ancestors of William Watts and Mary Brand, married Assington 6 Sept 1798. We have a record of a Susan Fenn who married a William Watts in Groton in April 1771. We are trying to establish that they are the parents of William who married Mary. Jacob Sparrow of Great Cornard was Mary's legal guardian and Jacob Sparrow Watts, her son - christened 5 Jannuary 1810, married Maria Shepherd in Glemsford, 12 February 1833.
We tend to get distracted and have various links between, among others, the families:
Brand
Fenn
Purr
Sparrow
Springett
Watts.
We would be grateful for any information that you or Sue have relating to these families. Tim Hutchinson
- As an aside, Tim also noted that several links are now unreachable. I'm sorry about that, but I can only work with what people tell me. I am leaving dead links in place; if you know any corrections please let me know.

I have only just got the family tree bug. My sister in law RITA WORDLEY has already done a great deal of work which she has kindly allowed me to crib.
I am researching the WORDLEY tree, and some of the names that crop up ELIZA CHATTERS Married JAMES WORDLEY on 30/12/1838 at Cavendish.
CHARLOTTE ADAMS Married GEORGE WORDLEY on 1.4.1869 at Cavendish. Charlote died in 1874 and he remarried EMMA GOLDING on 8/4/1877.
We (Rita and myself) would be pleased if anyone can help in our quest. We will of course help you in yours if we can.
- Can anyone help with information on my ancestor Thomas Allen born Glemsford 1838.
His father was William Allen. Thomas married Maria Steward in Lavenham in 1859 and worked there until moving to Bocking in Essex.
Of three children their daughter Mary Maria Allen married my great grandfather James Bentall in Bocking in 1885.

Many thanks Chris Bentall
- Brian Chatters posted this on my Guestbook too:
Surprised and delighted to find a site devoted to Glemsford.
My father, Reginald Bertie Chatters, was born in the village in 1908; his father, Bertie was born there in 1883; and his father, Charlie was born there in 1847.
Prior to that, the family came from the Belchamps via Pentlow and Cavendish.
My uncle, Dermot Arthur Chatters, ran the village shop for many years until his retirement in the early 1970's.
After his retirement, he had a bungalow built on the grounds behind the shop and his wife, Mabel,
still lives there as far as I know (although I have not had contact with her for a couple of years). I noticed from other information on this site that a
Chatters family lived at Monks Hall when it was three separate cottages.
I have a vague recollection of my father mentioning the place. Does anyone know precisely which Chatters' lived there and when?
I would be pleased to hear from anyone with a family connection.

I am researching the name of ARDLEY and have gone back to William Ardley & Martha Cook in Groton about the 1790s.
According to the IGI William Ardley was born in Chelmsford in 1758.
I am sure Chelmsford is wrong as I cannot trace him in the Chelmsford parish registers.
A flash of inspiration has just (and I mean just now 10.45am 15.12.2002) made me wonder if this should have been
Glemsford (the IGI is so bad in the transcription of English village names etc that this is more than likely). I will check against the parish registers as soon as possible -
not until well into the New year- but wonder if, in the meantime, any one has any information on this name.
- I received this by email from Sue Gibbons:
"... a few weeks ago I visited Glemsford church trying to trace some family history of the Brewster and the Boreham family of whom I originate from.
We were from the east end and my father was Frederick Brewster and his father was William and mother was Martha - these being my grandparents, and I believe that they were both born in Glemsford and their parents before them. I would be grateful for any information that you might be able to tell me." If anyone can help Sue, contact me at my address, and I will pass your messages on.
- Another email, from Peggy Shipton, asks for help in this way:
I have just been reading your Glemsford web page which I found extremely interesting.
We have just found out from the 1901 Census that my husband's grandmother, Jane Bird, was born in Glemsford circa 1860.
She married Frederick Shipton in 1880/81 and we think they married in London.
Can you or any of your readers give us information on this lady as we can find nothing. ...
I hope you, or any of your readers, will be able to assist me in my search for which I thank you in advance. Again, contact me at my address, if you can help, and I will pass your messages on.
- Chris Coleby has sent me this most welcome email:
"My Sister who lives in Lowestoft but is originally from Glemsford has sent me some information from the web of the history of Glemsford by Mr Hartley. It is great and I may have gone to school with him as I attended the Glemsford School from 1925 to 1933 when my family moved to Lowestoft.
My Father's name was Alfred Adams and we lived at Low Street, also his parents lived in one of the houses that was remodelled into Monks Hall.
My name is Christiana (mainly called Cissy) and my Sisters were Janet, Joan and Mary, also a Brother Arthur.
My Uncle Charlie Chatters lived in one of the cottages also and was married to my Aunt Ellen Adams.
I have quite a bit of information on the Chatters and I see by one of your newsletters you have people asking for information on that family.
I now live in Salt Lake City, Utah with my husband and family. It certainly would be fun to learn about Glemsford as it is today as I am writing a family history for my children.
Thank You for keeping the news of the village going." That makes all this worth the effort!
- Peter Goody wrote (on my Guest Book page):
"Very glad Glemsford has a site !! I am researching the Goody family tree and my Grand father and great grandfather lived in Glemsford and are noted as coconut mat makers. Christian names Percy and Charles - any Goodys left in Glemsford ?" Then he adds: Two of the
sons, Percy and Fred married sisters from the Hartley family of Bildeston
around 1910 .The families then seemed to get work on the railways and split
in different directions, Keighley in Yorks, Carlisle, and Wood Green in
London. Any info would be appreciated.
- An earlier request runs as follows:
"My sister and I have been researching our fathers family tree-surname Game, originating from Glemsford. By the most amazing luck & the kindness of two very distant and unknown relatives we were soon back to 1631.
However, our grandfather,George Game, d.o.b. 6.1.1866, christened 23.6.1867, whose parents were James & Marianne (nee Wade) Game, left Glemsford to live in London. When he married my grandmother, Florence Rogers, d.o.b. 7.12.1870, they were living at 10, Oval Rd, Middlesex. When my father, Charles was born, 4.4.1903, they were living at 18, Blinco Road, Central Hackney & he was a tram driver. Sometime after 1903, George left his wife & family and we can trace nothing for him after that date. There were 6 children: Frederick, James, Molly, Florence, Amy and Charles, plus a foster daughter Elsie.
If anyone has any information that could help us, please E-mail Daphne Jamieson

- Murray Case Richmond, BC Canada, has sent in this detail of his research:
"What I have from Glemsford is as follows: Jim Joyce, Lilian Joyce born about 1927, John Joyce children of: Ernest Joyce and Mary Chatters - now looking for further ancestors.
I found a Mary Jane Chatters who was christened 1 May 1851 and then married Henry Crisell on Oct 5th 1872 in Glemsford but not sure if Mary Chatters above is their daughter?
any help appreciated."
- Allison has this request:
"I am mainly researching the Twinn family of Glemsford. In particular this week I
obtained a copy of my GGG grandfathers will and in it he bequeathed a windmill to my GG grandfather James Wallace Twinn.
This was in the 1850's. Can any kind soul out there tell me where this windmill was? - I suppose it may not have been in Glemsford but on the outskirts?"
- Elizabeth Golding, from Kent, wrote to me as follows: "I believe my Goldings may have come from Glemsford, but havent made the
necessary link. My George Golding married in London in 1801, but he seems
to be associated with Mark, Samuel and Abraham Golding from Glemsford, who I
believe were the children of Mark and Bathsheba Golding. Mark and Samuel
also married in London (and Abraham was a witness) and I think Samuel is at
Sloane Street London on the 1841 census, living in the same street and having
the same occupation (coachman) as my George Golding. I thought George may
have been the son of John Golding and Hannah Creaton, but have since found
their George marrying in 1802 in Glemsford.
The name Mark Golding seems quite peculiar to the Suffolk Goldings, and
George had a grandson Mark (my gt gt grandfather)and the name Mark in our
family is in every generation. Can anyone help linking my George Golding
with the Suffolk ones? On his marriage in 1801 one of the witnesses was a
William Golding, whose handwriting seems of an older generation than Georges.
George names his first son Henry, and there does not appear to be any Henrys
on his wifes side, so this also could be a Golding name. Any help would be
greatly appreciated to connect to Suffolk. Most of my fathers other
ancestors also come from Suffolk."
If you can help, contact Elizabeth through me.

- Veronica Albon Hawes, from Ontario, Canada, has "...traced my father's family back to George Albon who owned the Black Lion. He died on 19/03/1872.
Don't know his birth date. He married Mary Sadler on 26/06/1829 in Glemsford and they had 5 children, James, Mary-Ann, Sarah, John and Richard.
We are descendents of James, born 11/06/1837. Mary-Ann married Frederick Beeton and Sarah married David Scott and Richard married Mary Beeton.
We don't know who John married. ..."
She is looking for any further info on the family line of Albon and Sadler. Thank you so very much.

- Gwenyth Beale, Margate, Queensland: I am researching the Game, Moore and Beale families.
My father's mother was Annie Game, and she and her mother (also Annie Game) owned the Crown Inn before emigrating to Australia after WWI.
G-Grandmother's maiden name was Moore, and the family came from Suffolk somewhere but I don't know where yet.
My Grandmother married John Robert Beale during WWI ( he was from London). I would appreciate any help with finding out more.
Here's a different one: I'm reproducing part of the original e-mail, in the hope someone might be able to help:
We are family of Evereds: in fact, I am Valeria Evered married to Anthony Keith Evered.
My husband can trace his family directly (father-son-father -son etc) to Henricus Evered married to Mary Biggs in 1580 in Glemsford.
From around 1780-1860 the family were in the Suffolk village of Barrow. We have visited the area in February this year for quite unusual reason
(and it is not practical joke) - the book "The Good Ghost Guide" by John Brooks @Jarrord Publishing ISBN 0-7117-0669-7 mentions The Bull (hotel in Long Melford).
Apparently, there was one "Richard Evered murdered there in 1648 by Roger Greene. The strange thing about the crime was the disappearance of the v
ictim's body, which was laid out at the hotel and then vanished overnight. It is Evered's ghost that walks here now."
We stayed in the hotel, but of course nothing happenned. The story is known in the area, and the hotel displays a note about the murder,
but not about the ghost. I discovered further mention about this ghost in books of known writer Peter Underwood, the chairman of Ghost Club in 1950-1960th.
I wonder if you would have any related info. Can anyone out there help?
If so, let me know. or
I've also received a request for any information anyone might have about an American resident of the village, in the 1960's, by the name of David Lampe. Lampe was apparently in the USAF until 1957, having served in Korea. He probably lived in Glemsford in a "350 year old cottage", writing books about, among other things, the Home Guard Auxiliary Units - the "underground resistance" - and the first tunnel to be dug under the Thames. Anyone got any ideas? Answers to me please.
UPDATE: I have heard from Sue Cairncross of Greenhill Books (www.greenhillbooks.com) that the mysterious Lampe wrote several books, namely
- THE LAST DITCH
- THE SAVAGE CANARY
- PYKE, THE UNKNOWN GENIUS
- THE SELF MADE VILLAIN
- THE TUNNEL
Now, does anyone else have any more information?
