With the change to the website address, I am - at least for the time being - changing access to this page.
As with the main Guest Book page, I'm more than happy to host a page of questions, searches,
comments, whatever, but "open access" has been causing problems so please use this address to email
me your requests, and I will paste them alongside, and deal with any responses.
If you decide NOT to include your address on the page (which I would advise), I will act as a postmaster for others to contact you through me.
I know that's a bit long-winded, and I'd prefer you to be able to contact each other direct, but misuse of the Internet may mean you prefer it this way.
I've pasted all the older entries on to a separate page so that there is a complete set.
I know a number of the links are out of date, but there's nothing I can do unless people let me have up-to-date details.
E-mail addresses are now all removed, as promised.
Happy hunting!

Enquiries and requests:
Pauline has not heard from Debbie Hedges since a request for contact at the back end of 2005
Perhaps Debbie could contact me again - admin@glemsford.org.uk - and I'll pass on any messages.
Andy Morley - email address provided - has added the following, which relates to the Pettit family:
With regard to the email below, my mother, June (Rosemary) Morley, nee Herrington of Herrington's Newsagents in Risbygate Street Bury St Edmunds took me to see her
Grandfather's Coach-Building workshop in Bury three years ago. Now it's an is now an undertakers and I have photos if anyone's interested.
Her mother was Dorothy Grace Pettit, daughter of Clement Pettit, who can be found in the 1901 Census and who owned various properties in Mustow Street Bury - I can supply
details if required of a dozen or so Pettits who lived there as I just found them on the Internet.
Dorothy, or 'Nanny Herrington' as I knew her, told me how she would go to the coach works to see her father, and how the workmen would paint gold rings on her finger. Those
coaches had about 14 coats of paint, and some of the workmen died of lead poisoning from the constant exposure.
Anyway, Clement was the son of James Pettit who came from Glemsford - village carpenters they were I believe. Interesting that doing a quick search, I found a carriage for sale
on the Internet for £2,500.
I'm not particularly into this stuff myself - this information was just the result of being bored over Christmas and playing about with Google. But my mother I'm sure would be
delighted to make the acquaintance of distant family members. She and my father (a 'furriner' from the East Midlands) still live in East Anglia.
One thing though - I have a table; a rough round oak one maybe three feet in diameter, which stands on a three-legged pedestal and which tilts. Interesting because the pedestal is
octagonal, and with three legs, that presents the joiner who made it with an interesting geometrical problem. It's bound in iron under the table surface. Is there any way I can find
out whether this table was made by a Glemsford Pettit, or whether it was something that my Grandfather, Walter Herrington, picked up at auction..?

Hi
I'm looking for information about Mary Webb born 1818 in Glemsford.
I believe her parents to be John Webb & Sarah Browne.
She married Robert Mott in Cowlinge in 1839.
Any information on the above or what Glemsford was like then would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Deb
If you can help Deb, you can contact her via me at this address
Pauline, who has given me her email address, Wednesday November 2 2005
Hi
This is a shot in the dark about a family association, not a blood relative, and I have only sketchy details.
My grandfather Walter Gartside, born 1887 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, was sent to Glemsford during the 1914-18 war,
I believe to do farm labouring. (Or, according to one family member, silk weaving because he was a weaver by trade.)
This was because he was considered not medically fit enough to go to war. He lodged in Glemsford with a family by the name
of Twinn - a widow whom he only knew as 'Mrs Twinn', but who was affectionately known by everyone in the local community as
'old Mrs Twinn'. She had 2 sons (one of whom was possibly called Jim)and had a smallholding which Walter helped with.
My grandfather spoke of his time with Mrs Twinn and her family with great affection, how he was made welcome and treated like a son.
My late mother tried in vain to find this family before the days of the internet.
know there are many Twinns in Glemsford and it doesn't help that I have no idea of Mrs Twinn's first name.
One clue which might help indirectly is that Walter had a broad Yorkshire accent and would have 'stood out' in the area.
I would really like to make contact with any descendents of this Mrs Twinn. Does anyone recognise this lady in their family
history?
Thank you,
Pauline
Don't forget, if you have any news for Pauline, you can contact her via me at this address

Husband, Cyril John Beale, born 1920 in Glemsford, (I think)son of John Robert Beale (London) and Annie Mary (nee Game). Bob and Annie were married in 1918 in Sudbury district. Annie Mary daughter of Walter Game and Anna (nee Moore). Walter Game and brother Alfred Game, married sisters Priscilla and Anna Moore. Walter and Alfred's parents died early and they were brought up by Grandma Rice. Anna owned the Crown Inn in Glemsford. She emigrated to Australia with her daughter, Annie, and Bob (John Robert Beale) and their two sons, Cyril John (my late husband) and Frank Walter in 1928. Does anybody have any information about the Rice, Game or Moore families who may be connected? I am looking for D.O.B, marriages, deaths, etc primarily for immediate family history.

James Pettit in Colchester at 16:45:07 Friday August 26 2005
My Family come from Glemsford. The oldest I can find is Richard Pettit (1750 to 1840)married to Elizabeth Carey. They had two children, Richard Marchal and Charlotte. Richard Marchal married Hannah Hartley. They had 9 children. The oldest Richard married Maria Adams and I think I have found her grave in the churchyard. Later the son James who started a coachbuilding firm at Mustow Street in Bury St Edmunds appeared to be a trustee of the Garland Street Baptist Church so the is why I have doubts about Maria Adams grave. Maria is shown on the 1881 census as living at Tye Green. This also shows her as being born in 1818 but the grave I found says died 1906 aged 92 i.e. 1814. Still I suppose it could still be the correct grave. People often forgot their year of birth. The grave also says wife of Richard which fits. I am eager to find more members of the family, possible some still live in Glemsford. I have already checked out a Pettit living in Tye Green but it is not a relative. (Opposite end from the green)I have a disposable email address on which I can be contacted so if any spam comes in it does not matter as it isn't my main address and I can dump it a create a new one. It is fixcentral-pcs@yahoo.co.uk
Thanks in advance for any help.
By the way, I have seen the note further down by Derek Pettit, and we are in touch.

Trying to prove which Jeremiah Ost was the father of George Ost born 1814 who married Charlotte Grice, had 2 daughters and 3 sons and died in Long Melford in 1860 (his son James is my great, great grandfather). Various records I've looked at tend to confuse Jeremiah, son of thomas ost/ann gridley born 1785; with jeremiah son of jeremiah ost /susan adams born 1773.
Also, from where did Rose Kerrington get the lands and houses in Glemsford she left to Richard (one of her younger sons)in her will of 1583? Other land (in Rede?)left for use in her life by her husband Henry(in 1559), on her death was to go to their eldest son Robert& his heirs, & he didn't die until 1615.

Goody, Hartley, Copsey, Suttle, Watkinson, Pryke, Brooks, Collar, Garwood and Mitchell all documented but after Glemsford and the 1881 census ? well I have started on the 1901 but the scattering had started.

He was born in Glemsford on 3 February 1836.
His mother Lucey died on 7 Aug 1839 and his father Charles had moved to London by 1841.
I would like to know with whom Alfred was living in 1841. Many thanks for any assistance.

GAME FAMILY ENG > Michigan USA. Attention please, Rhonda in Austrailia, Andrew Clarke, and Christine Tyrrell - - -
I am searching for information on James J. GAME, born about 1866 in Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England. In 1892 he married Mary Ann CHAPMAN in Elham district, Kent, England. She was born about 1871 in Biddenden, Kent Co., England and died after 1922, daughter of Thomas Chapman and Jane Edmett.
Mary Ann Chapman's eight siblings were all born in Biddenden, also, and I have names and birth dates for them; they were all born between 1865 - 1880.
Now, the parents and all of the children EXCEPT for Mary Ann, moved to the United States, and located in Branch County, Michigan USA. Mary Ann stayed in England because she was married and I don't know what other reaseons.
I have a lot of information about this CHAPMAN family, but hardly anything on the GAME union. Would love to exchange information with someone who is familiar with the JAMES J. GAME family.
One of Mary Ann's brothers, James W. Chapman died February 1922, and in his obituary, it listed a sister Mrs. Mary Game who was living in Ipswich, England.
We have found the 1901 census, ?hintlesham, East Sussex shows,
Mary Game age 29 born Biddenden Kent
Albert 8 b. Windsor, James 7 b. Norwich, then Charles 5, Herbert 3 and Eva 2 all b. Chattisham Suffolk.
There is no husband listed.
Please help me find information on these children, and I would really love to find a descendant of Jame & Mary Ann GAME, to share info and photos of the Chapman family after they moved to Michigan USA.
Contact me please, if you can help !

hi i'm looking for any information on charles wordley from cavendish. he married susan herbert in 1880. if any one knows of any info please could you email me.
Steve Clarke, for Christine I just wiped the original request, by mistake!Ellen Smith was 58 in 1901, not 53. My mistake.
In 1891, she was already a widow, she was licensee of the Three Turns, living there with her sons Julian and Albert, and her mother
Harriet Byford (85) and Janet Byford, listed as "servant", aged 14 and a barmaid!
The marriage is listed for 1868; Theodore's death was in 1882.
In 1871, Theordore and Ellen, with infant Albert, were resident with the Byford family, of Edward and Harriet, again in the Three Turns.
Edward was the Publican. Interestingly, the Three Turns, at the bottom of Skates Hill, is recorded in 1871 as being at "Towns End" - a logical name, but one that has fallen out of use.
There was a small mat making factory behind the Three Turns, which would account for Theodore's occupation. Theodore was born at Swaffham in Norfolk.

For Rhonda. I'm so pleased you read our Foxearth (F&DLHS) site. William's move to Faversham explains why we couldn't find him in the list of Transportees. The surname is an unusual one. There are no Humms left in Glemsford or Faversham. Most Humms live in Colchester (85 of them), so they must have originally moved out to Suffolk from there. It is a very East-Anglian name, even now. Likewise the Game family, who originally came from Ipswich and the Glemsford/Sudbury area, I believe.
Best of luck with the researches!
Rhonda in Sydney, Australia at 10:55:33 Monday December 20 2004
For Andrew Clarke: Thank you for the interesting information. I had found that information on William Humm and John Humm in Newspaper extracts at the Foxearth site. My William Humm born about 1798 in Suffolk (from his Australian death certificate). He had a brother James born 1808 in Glemsford. William married Eleanor Game on 25th November 1828 in Glemsford, he had two children by her. However he may had been married previously to ? and may have had 3 children. (this from conflicting information in his convict record). At some stage he moved to Kent where his son George was born in 1829 in Faversham. He was convicted at the Kent Quarter Sessions on 6 Jan 1835 for stealing 5 bushels of applies. Transported to VDL on Aurora. I am intrigued as to who looked after his son. Did he return to Suffolk to family with his mother? George eventually married in Kent, came to Australia in 1853, buys land, goes to Michigan and has children there, then comes to Australian to stay in 1860. I am also interested in the Michigan connection. On doing searches on the IGI in Michigan a lot of Glemsford folk come up.

'Transportees from Suffolk to Australia 1787-1867' was published by Seven Sparrows Publishing in 2000 by Garry Deeks, Richard Deeks' son. The address of Severn Sparrows Publishing is given as...
Seven Sparrows Publishing
The Old Manse,
Laxfield Road,
Fressingfield,
Eye,
Suffolk IP91 5PX
when it originally came out it cost £7.99.
I'd like another copy myself as the one I use is borrowed. It is really indespensible for anyone doing research on Suffolk Transportees. It was a colossal piece of work which took Richard Deeks a huge effort to compile.
As a matter of interest, Dorothy Deeks has reprinted Richard's 'Glorious Glemsford' which is another essential item.
Denis Oakley in Denmead , Hants at 17:52:18 Tuesday December 14 2004
Sorry about the one sent a few minutes ago! It sent itself before I was ready.
Did Richard Deeks write one, or two books on transportation?
My booklet which he gave me is " Those transported from Glemsford to Australia 1787 -1868". I got the impression that he was working on a wider ranging book.
This booklet is presumably still copyright, which would be held by Richard's heirs and sucessors.
Is the booklet about Glemsford still available? If not to whom should I apply to be able to make copies of parts of the booklet, to give to another researcher on some of the families concerned. I would not want to infringe their copyright.
James Oakley was undoubtedly one of my Glemsford Oakleys, but I have not been able to pin down which one. Other members of my Glemsford family are also mentioned in the book. These are Abraham Brewster, and Charles Brewster.
Someone came back from Australia as I have a tollgate token dated 1865 from a tollgate in Hobart, found in the Croft area of Glemsford.

In reading Rhonda's note on November 30th and November 8th, I was intrigued to read of William Humm's arrival in Australia in 1835. John Humm of Glemsford also ended up in Australia. In January 23rd 1828.
I can't find anything about William Humm committing a crime. In July 15th 1835, -Samuel Seeley was committed to Bury gaol, charged with stealing a great coat from William Humm at Glemsford. If it was the same chap he couldn't have got to Australia in the same year. I can't find his name at the right place in in Richard Deeks' masterpiece "Transportees from Suffolk to Australia 1787-1867" either.
James Oakley and John Humm of Glemsford were committed to Bury gaol on their own confessions of having stolen two horses, two saddles and two bridles from the stables of the Rev E.D.Butts of Glemsford and the property of Henry Craven Esq. At the Suffolk Assizes the death sentence was pronounced with recomendations of transportation to the colonies for life.
At the beginning of May 1828, he was removed from Bury gaol to the Leviatham hulk at Portsmouth.
he sailed on the 'Lord Melville' on the 14th November 1828 together with 168 other convicts to New South Wales and arrived on 3rd of May 1829.
John Humm had been in trouble before, it would seem; firstly for assaulting John Mansfield, gamekeeper to Earl Howe at Cavendish, whereupon he was sentenced to be imprisoned until he gave surety of 40 pounds.
Secondly, in February 1823 when he and Isaac Goody were charged with stealing six bushels of wheat in the chaff from the barn of Sidney Eldred at Glemsford.

Hello Steve, Further to my search for the place of Horace Claydons' accident, I have been sent a copy of the newspaper article detailing the inquiry. As you can imagine quite emotional... The place is clearly named as The Mill Hill Farm. The Baldock Brothers were providing steam machinery and labourers for the harvest. All the men listed are from Haverhill except a Mr Peacock. As I read it the accident was a result of Horace, employed as 'cook boy'giving a drink to one of the crew on the steam plough. As the man got off Horace took his place. A case of added excitement for a 15 yr old boy no doubt. It clearly states how all the men did everything they could after the fall and that no blame is placed at any of them. I wonder if any member of the village in their 90s would recall this? It was reported in the Norwich and Bury Free press. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy 2005 Regards

He would have been born in 1837 but just before the registration period started. I keep drawing blanks with him - there'snothing in the Mormon site. Does anyone have any leads on this please? Richard Holden in richard.holden@ukgateway.net at 16:56:38 Monday November 29 2004
I am researching my paternal grandmother’s family who hail from Glemsford. My great great grandfather was Charles Adams born in 1842 (do not have year of death) in Glemsford, who married Susan (unsure of maiden name) who was born in 1840, again in Glemsford. They lived at Church Gate at the time of the 1881 census (could this be Churchgate Farm?) – my great great grandfather was a mat weaver and the sexton; this tallys with Churchgate farm which was (is?) adjacent to St Mary’s Church.
Charles and Susan Adams had 6 children at the 1881 census date – Walter Frank born 1867 (my great grandfather) known as Frank; Mary Anne born 1869; William W born 1874; Jane born 1876; Kate born 1878 and Oscar E S born 1879. All the children were born in Glemsford.
Walter Frank left Glemsford by the time of the 1901 census – when he was living in Hampstead with his wife Louisa and their 6 children. The children were Walter O born 1895; Florence (Flossie) L born 1896; Archibald J born 1897; Frederick H born 1899; Mabel (my Grandmother) and Evelyn (Evie). All the children were born in Hampstead or St Pancras and all have passed away apart from the youngest Evie. Walter Frank was a hansom cab driver in.
My father remembers taking Flossie to Glemsford on her 80th birthday (1976) where she met with her cousin Olive who was married to a Scotsman called Jock.
So I am interested in filling any of the gaps in the information above and locating new information available on ancestors who preceded Charles Adams, my great great grandfather; whether he had any more children after Oscar E S in 1879; Charles’s siblings if any and who of the Adams, if anyone, stayed in Glemsford after 1901. I know this is a lot to ask but any info would be gratefully received – I am not looking to make contact with anyone merely wishing to complete a picture.

Hi ..... Having had my few pounds worth of the 1901 census I am half convinced that my family lived in Glemsford. My Grandfather was William Porter (aged 7 in 1901) and he lived with his Grandparents, William and Anna (born in Glemsford in 1841) in Hunts Hill (they are presumably my Great Great Grandparents). I'm not yet sure of my Great Grandparents but I'd hazard a guess that they are Thomas and Sarah, listed as living in Fye Green (would that be Tye Green?) There seem to be a links back to Halstead, Long Melford then Porters moving to Kensington, back to Halstead, Ballingdon and Great Malvern. I have not as yet proceeded with any other form of research and have no definite proof that any of the above are in fact my relatives but for the fact that my Grandmother claimed that my Grandfather came from the Shimpling area. Obviously I need to find out more but if anyone has come across anything relating to the name Porter then I'd be obliged if they would contact me. I was particularly interested in the page on this site relating to those who were gave their lives in battle. My Grandfather was severely injured in WW1, a terrible head wound that left him blind in one eye and only partially sighted in the other. That he survived was a miracle. Thanks ... John Porter .... now living in Derbyshire having been born and raised in Bury St.Edmunds.

Reading the Glemsford Roll of Honour I came across the name of Robert Garwood ( died 1917), resident of Glemsford but born in Stanstead ( yes Stephen that place again!) who was the son of James and Eliza Garwood. My grandfather Robert Brett Smith was the son of Thomas Brett Smith and Emily Garwood (b.17/03/1846 d.04/04/1885 in Stanstead). She was the daughter of William Garwood and Bathsheba Ive. Does anyone have any info to keep me going until I can visit this lovely area which I discovered for the first time this year? Thank you for any help.

Re Steve's note abput the Brewsters.
In 1901 Jemima would have been aged 70. I think she was the only Jemima Brewster who lived in Glemsford.
Steve Clarke for Lynda Morris at 09:53:58 Thursday October 28 2004
That'll be David and Sarah Brewster, living on Bells Lane at the time of the 1901 Census, with 5 children, including Laura, a silk winder.
Jemima, a widow, was living just up the road. Possibly the right one, given the ages.

Steve Clarke - for Jayne Bennet at 10:01:29 Monday October 25 2004
I should have added:
the Census (1901) shows a Mill House on the Glem (its obvious position) just to the west of Cranmore Lane, on one of the fascinating "old roads" across the parish.
Might that be a possibility? I've been trying to locate one or two places from the 1901 Census.
"Broom Farm", for instance, my usual contacts in the village had not heard of, but, looking for your Field Farm, and what do I find?
- Broom Farm is there, large as life on the 1904 (?) map: that's near the Mill too, by the way. The message, I suppose, is don't despair - it's there somewhere!
Steve Clarke - for Jayne Bennet at 09:53:36 Monday October 25 2004
Jayne: I've been looking at the large scale maps of Glemsford for the late 19th/early 20th Century.
"Mill Hill Farm" is clearly marked as that, so a name change doesn't seem likely.
There is also a "Mill Farm" near Cranmore Green on the very edge of Glemsford, between Stanstead and Melford,
"West Mill" by the station, and "Hill Farm" on Duff's Hill.
Mill Lane doesn't appear on the census for 1901 - that doesn't prove anything, of course, but it may be an indicator of a Lane by a Mill
known by that name by the locals. People today certainly talk about "Mill Hill" as an area, not just a farm.
Intriguing stuff. Keep us informed. I'll keep looking. Best Wishes.

All OAKLEY families of Glemsford. My line goes back to Romanus who married Mary Allen in 1624. My Father was the first member of my family not to have been buried in the Glemsford Parish churchyard. Trying to find out where Romanus came from.
Also cannot find marriage of THomas Oakley to Mary Merrills (or Crick) in about 1722.
Other family of immediate interest is BREWSTER, my paternal Grandmother being Harriett d/o Samuel and Jemima (née BROWN).
As a matter of interest my Father had 91 first cousins in Glemsford!

Does anyone have any recollections of a Field Farm in Mill Lane in the early 1920s? This address is taken from a newspaper article following the inquest into my great uncles' accidental death in the village. I have now visited Glemsford and spoke to some of the villagers who were extremely helpful and told me of a Mill Hill farm...I wonder if this is the same place re-named? The Baldock brothers had come up from Haverhill (they had traction engines)to undertake harvest work, I believe, and Horace was working for them. There was a man called Benjamin Cooper driving one of the engines and I think he was from Helions Bumpstead or the surrounding area. I don't have an e-mail address, so unfortunately I can only rely on weekly visits to my library to check webwsites. If anyone is able to help, please leave any details for me. I have tried to contact the History Society, but the number given to me by Glemsford Tourist Information Office is incorrect. I would appreciate any help as this is part of an extensive research into my family history over the past 14 months. Regards

I have recently completed a transcription of the 1901 Census for Glemsford. It shows 4 Byford families in the village: a farmer on Skates Hill, a farm labourer on Hunts Hill, a "cocoanut matting weaver" in Chequers Lane and a "Cocoanut Manufacturer and Shopkeeper" on Brook St (very close to Chequers Lane). Altogether 16 residents shared the surname and all the male Byfords show Glemsford as their birthplace.
