Local History Society: September 2004

Glemsford's Village Sign

The First Meeting of the Glemsford Local History Society:
New Season: September 2004.

It is a real pleasure to report the new directions that the Local History Society is taking after all these years.

The first meeting of the new season took place, not in the village hall, but at the Silk Factory and in the President's Garden.
Herewith, a light-hearted report of proceedings:

The weather was very kind to us for the GLHS event.
We had an interesting tour of the silk mill, although it was a bit of a struggle for some due to the heat and noise, as we stood up for more than 45 minutes.
I think the village has something to be proud of, though.
A sumptuous barbeque was then laid on at the President's House. We lent our large gazebo, and fortunately the day, and evening, was dry with no sign of the 'Glemsford Breeze'.
Harold & Joyce Ager's daughter Anne (formerly of the Black Lion) volunteered to do the barbequeing, which was great.
I became Trifle Monitor & Raffle Queen as is now my niche in life.
Many people generously donated desserts and raffle prizes - so many of the latter, the draw went on for such a long time I nearly sent the chaps home to have a shave!
George and Anne generously provided the rest of the food, (meat, salads, etc.) and the wine, as well, of course, as the use of their beautiful garden with tables attractively dressed with floral arrangements.

Excellent! The Society goes from strength to strength.
The programme for the season can be found here.

There is so much to the village that deserves closer examination.

St Mary's Church in Glemsford, by the way, is still some way short in its appeal for funds for vital repairs.

The village has lost enough amenties in recent years let's not lose another.

The appeal is URGENT, and if any of you feels able to contribute now, I'm sure that the Rector, Patrick Prigg would be delighted to hear from you.
