Oakley-Jackson-Gridley-Mortlock

Susan Catudal, in Montreal (via London), has been in touch about her family, part of which emerged from Glemsford. I have been able to offer some general assistance, but would like to see what people have to offer about these points:

One missing link in my family tree is with an ancestor named Emma Mortlock.
Born in Glemsford in 1849 to Caroline Mortlock( 1820). No father is named on Emma's birth cert, so she was given her mother's surname.
Emma married Abraham Oakley Jackson in 1869 and the following year my Grandfather, Harry Jackson was born.
I would like to find relatives of his 2 brothers -Johnny Jackson(1876) and Percy(1884) - all born in Glemsford.
Harry eventually came to London after the Boer War.

Another 'mystery' is that Abraham Oakley Jackson seems also to be named after his mother, Amelia Jackson(1832).
I did, curiously enough, find one Abraham Oakley(1836) who I assume was with Amelia Jackson, but maybe never married her.

I found on a census a brother for Abraham Oakley Jackson being born in 1854 , being raised by an Abraham Oakley! I would like to know if A Oakley was indeed the father and why the children were surnamed Jackson!

If anyone can help, Susan's email address is:
susancatudal AT videotron.ca

(if you're a real person rather than one of those infernal Spam machines, you'll be able to replace the AT with an @ - and no spaces!)

or, of course, you can contact me!

Oakley Family

Ben Oakley has been in touch:

I am researching the Oakleys in Glemsford.

I currently have my self, Ben Oakley b.1978, linked back to Jarmin Oakley b.1772 via Nigel, Edward, Ben, Harry, Henry and William.

It is fairly 'bare bones' at the moment so any padding would be helpful.

I would appreciate being added to your page.

Searching through the archives, I see a few names that I am already in contact with so it should prove fruitful.

Well done on a good site and I hope it continues.

My pleasure, Ben. Thanks for the comment.

As usual, anyone who wishes to get in touch can either leave a message/comment here or email me.

It works!

At last, someone has added a successful comment to an earlier request - see September 2006, the Oakleys.

It proves the page can work.

So now you can all get commenting.

Oakley and Turner: Sydney, NSW

Could anyone having info on James Oakley (England) or Jane Turner (Scotland) who married at St Andrews Scots church in Sydney NSW, 1849, witnesses George Brown and Helen McGray, please contact me?

There were a few James Oakleys transported from England to Australia, including James Oakley from Glemsford in 1829.

There was a James Oakley of Dudley, Worcestershire, born 1810 who was tried at age 22 at Stafford Assizes for stealing fowls.
He sailed for Australia onthe "Parmelia" on 16 November 1832.
He had been married and had two male children. Does anyone know more about their family line?

Regards,

Susan Lamberton (nee Oakley)

As always, contact me (Steve Clarke) in the first instance, and I will put you in touch with Susan.

Help needed for the Oakley family.

I am trying to find out when my Great Great Grandmother Mary Ann Oakley was born in Glemsford and any information that would help me to take the line back further.

The census information gives birth dates of 1835-1842 and I can find no suitable entries on the birth, marriage and death indices.

Her parents were Timothy who married Amelia Edwards in 1831 in Glemsford.

On the 1841 census she is shown living with 2 older bothers, William and Hezekiah, and one younger brother Thomas at Creeksea in Essex.
Timothy died in 1849 and the family fell on hard times with Amelia being sentenced to a year in prison in 1851 and Mary Ann ending up in Rochford Union Workhouse, Rochford, Essex.
There are 3 Oakley brothers born between 1843-1846 also in the workhouse at this time who may or may not be connected to Mary Ann.

Any help would be much appreciated.
