The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin

Glemsford

An Appeal to those who are investigating, researching or just plain looking at, Glemsford on the Internet

Glemsford's Historic Church is in urgent need of Repair, Restoration and Improvement to meet modern needs

If you have not already done so, you can find out about the history of the building, and its construction, by reading details of Clive Paine's 2002 visit on the occasion of the Jubilee.

March 2005: An update

What is so urgent?

  • The North Porch is in an advanced state of decay
  • The stonework needs renovation
  • There is a need for many general repairs to the fabric
  • We must meet our legal obligation to provide disabled access
  • We must provide toilet and washing facilities accessible to those with disabilities

To do all this needs at least £80 000.

From its own everyday resources, the Church cannot find this money: we need extra help.

What is being done?

  • Regular and diverse fund raising events have been held, and there will be more over the coming months.
  • An Action Group has been formed and is carrying out DIY repairs, including:
    • digging out and renovating the surrounding French drains
    • repairing damage to the stonework and woodwork
    • replacing tiles and carpeting, etc.
  • English Heritage have offered a grant towards the costs, but this will be lost if we cannot match their offer from other sources

We're doing what we can, but it is not enough without more help from outside

.

How can you help?

  • Donations: please be generous.
  • UK taxpayers can add to the amount they contribute without donating more themselves:
every £20 donated provides an extra £4.40 for the Church
  • DIY skills are in great demand: the Action Group will make good use of yours
  • If you have used this web site and would like to contribute something in return, this is your chance.

An update:

Thanks to fund-raising, donations, and contributions from English Heritage and other bodies, a large proportion of the required restoration funds have been raised for Phase 1 (in the region of £60,000) and the contracts have now been signed to enable the repairs to the porch to commence during the first week of May.

The Restoration Appeal is very much on-going, as about £30,000 - £40,000 is still needed for Phase 2, which includes a toilet and kitchen to be installed in the new porch area.

There are several fund-raising events being planned, which include a quiz on 12th March, Open Gardens and an American Cookery Demonstration.

Donations will still be gratefully received, and are urgently needed.
