One Day in May - 2000: The Glemsford Local History Society

Jacqueline Street

May Day 2000

Today is a Bank Holiday, the second in a row, as Easter was very late this year. It is a beautiful morning and we are doing do-it-yourself (DIY), getting ready for the new carpets. We are in the garden weeding and making a new patio in front of the greenhouse.

The Street's Garden

We have had lunch and are walking up Angel hill and looking towards Cavendish, a glorious view. The crops are thriving, and horses graze contentedly: not many people about as we walk back through the playing fields, although some boys are playing football.

There is blossom in the gardens and we have a word with our neighbours, who spoke of the recent heavy rain. Our flautist neighbour practises - we are lucky that she is so talented, as she practises many hours a day.

An aeroplane drones overhead as we cut the lawn with the electric lawn mower. It is now cloudy and warm. We check the E-mail on the personal computer (PC) and there is one from our eldest son. We listen to the news on the radio. There is a May Day demonstration in London, normally a Labour rally. It is taken over by anarchists against capitalism. The Wimbledon Football Club manager has been sacked because of poor results.

Bed time.
