Was One of Glemsford’s Oldest Inhabitants

By the passing of Mr Bartle Allen of 14 Egremont Street, Glemsford has lost one of its oldest inhabitants and a great authority on past events in the history of the parish Aged 87 years, Mr Allen, who was a native of the village, was a descendant of one of the oldest Glemsford families, being a son of the late Mr and Mrs Alfred Allen of Egremont Street.

All his life he had been engaged in the teaching profession. He left Glemsford in his younger days and before his retirement was for many years a schoolmaster in Maidstone in Kent. On his retirement in 1928 he returned to reside in his native parish, where at one time he served as a Glemsford County School manager. He had been a widower for many years. He is survived by two sons and one daughter.

Funeral

The funeral took place at the parish church of St Mary the Virgin on Wednesday, the rector, the Rev. Kenneth Glass, officiating.

Immediate mourners were Mr Brian Allen, Mr Rupert Allen, sons; Mrs G. Watson, daughter; Mrs B. Allen, Mrs R. Allen, daughters-in-law; Mrs M. Mayhew (Pentlaw [sic]), sister, also representing Mr Wilfred Allen, New Zealand, (brother); Mr C. Mayhew (Pentlow), nephew; Mrs M. Broadhurst, Mrs C. H. Pettit, friend. Others present included Mr E.D. Porter. There were several beautiful wreaths.

By the death of Mr Bartle Allen, of 14 Egremont Street, Glemsford, the parish has lost one of its oldest inhabitants, who was also an authority on past events in the history of the village.

A native of Glemsford, Mr Allen was 87. He was a descendant of one of the oldest Glemsford families, being a son of the late Mr and Mrs Alfred Allen, of Egremont Street. He had been engaged in the teaching profession all his life.

He left Glemsford in his younger days and was for many years before his retirement, a school master in Maidstone, Kent. On his retirement in 1928, he returned to reside in his native village, where at one time he served as a Manager of the Glemsford County Primary School. His wife predeceased him in 1930, and he is survived by a family of two sons and one daughter.
