When, eventually, Foxearth came up with our Real Family, I chuckled to myself, in an embarrassed way, and then tried to forget Will.
Except, of course, I couldn't.
After all, Emma Savage referred several times to "Will". We knew from the Census that he was at 88-90 York Road. We knew that Rillo Brown worked there.
So William Savage was hard to ignore.
It was honestly only when I was doing the tidying up - odds and ends - that it occurred to me that
I should put Will "to rest", so I went back to the censuses.
Again, I am reasonably confident with these findings, although there is one glaring discrepancy with ages in the 1901 Sudbury Census. In brief:
- The William Savage of 1901 is described as having been born in Sudbury. In 1901 he was 33.
- In 1891, William Savage, aged 23, born Sudbury, a "Restaurant Manager", was boarding at 36 Fitzroy Square, St Pancras.
- In 1881, 13 year old William Savage was living on Lavenham Road, Sudbury, with his parents,Charles and Hannah (37 and 40).
Charles was a Cocoa mat weaver. Charles was born in Cavendish
- In 1871 - I can't find Charles or William!
- In 1861, Charles Savage was, aged 18, living with his parents, John and Jane, in Cavendish. So was his brother George.
- The Sudbury Census for Lavenham Road in 1901 shows Charles (born Cavendish) and Hannah Savage - unfortunately it gives Charles' age as 47.
Nevertheless, allowing for a possible miscalculation/mistranscription (or simple forgetfulness)
of age in the 1901 Census, I firmly believe that William Savage was George, and therefore Emma's, nephew, who became closely
associated with the family businesses.
